One of my favorite terms (besides ‘Cool!’) is ‘Situational Awareness’ or ‘SA’.  Wikipedia describes SA as ‘being aware of what is happening around you to understand how information, events, and your own actions will impact your goals and objectives, both now and in the near future’.  I first learned about SA while I was in flight school in the Navy.   I’ve come to realize that maintaining SA doesn’t apply just to aviation but also business – and in my case, its probably the smartest or luckiest thing I could have done.  In the early days, pure paranoia drove my need to have a handle on everything going on within the company – and is the primary reason that I am still the CFO of Craig Technologies (along with many other titles).  Out of paranoia grew the realization that by understanding all the aspects of our growing company, I could provide insight and recommendations that others could not.  This was simply because I could see the big picture and address issues with a ‘holistic’ view as opposed to parts.  Many people see this type of oversight as micromanagement – that isn’t the case.  It is my job to provide guidance when it is needed most and the only way to do that is to have a complete understanding of what is going on in our company.  My biggest recomendation to the entrepreneur and CEO – stay involved and tell your employees that ‘CC’ or ‘BCC’ on the email is a very good thing!!
